The Night of Power & Literacy – Laylatul Qadr

With the name of Allah(God), Most Kind, Most Merciful…

Did you know that the little cell phone you using, the car you driving and every other technological product you use everyday can be traced back to Laylatul Qadr?

Allah(SWT) clearly tells us that this night is better than a thousand months, better than a lifetime. This night brought meaning and purpose to our thousand months on Earth. We seem to be waiting for a miracle on this hidden night and so have forgotten what made this night so precious in human history.

Laylatul Qadr, is that night on which Allah(SWT) sent the first revelations to His final messenger Muhammed(SAW) through the archangel Jibraeel(AS).

The first 5 verses revealed over 1400 years ago. A time ruled by ignorance and superstition. A time commonly referred to as Jahilliyah(Ignorance)

اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ

READ! In the name of your Lord and Cherisher, Who created-

Note 1 – The first command to Believers, NOT SALAH, NOT ZAKAH, …1st COMMAND – READ

Not just READ, but READ in the name of your LORD

خَلَقَ الإنْسَانَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ

Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood:

Your Lord who created all human Beings out of a clinging clot

This first command that made it a religious duty to read, to seek knowledge began the NEW WORLD ORDER, that has led to every technological breakthrough we use in our everyday lives. Yap, your cell phone too.

اقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ الأكْرَمُ

Read! And your Lord is Most Bountiful,-

Kareem – Bountiful / productive. READ and the bounties will flow from a most Generous Lord.

Kareem – Nobility – READ and you will become nobleman

الَّذِي عَلَّمَ بِالْقَلَمِ

He Who taught (the use of) the pen,-

Reading must be accompanied by writing. The process of knowledge must be established and Reading and writing are to become the foundation of the future and thus it became in Muslim lands

Literacy was established on this night. Literacy was going to destroy ignorance and superstition. Literacy was going to establish a clear understanding of our Creator and Literacy would lead mankind to freedom, justice and prosperity. Over 1400 years ago Literacy was established in Islam.

عَلَّمَ الإنْسَانَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ

Taught man that which he knew not.

Chapter 96 Verses 1-5

Indeed Lalytul Qadr was the most important night in human history, not just in Muslim history. The conquest and growth of Islam from Arabia to the rest of the world took the idea of literacy coupled with faith in Allah and established it wherever it went.

SAD and shameful how we Muslims, have lost the legacy of being pioneers of education when even the Prophet(SAW) is reported to have said “The seeking of knowledge is obligatory for every Muslim.” – Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 74

Muslim history is filled with discovery, technology and progress. If we compare the Golden ages of the Muslim era to our times, the significant difference is the quest, application and spread of knowledge. Al Khwarismi, Ibn Sina, Ibn Khuldun, Imam Ghazali are among numerous names of Muslims that were part of the foundation of modern sciences and technology.

The Muslims in Spain and other parts of the Muslim world were translating the books of the Greeks, building libraries, contemplating and studying the amazing, wonderful, beautiful creation of the world. Whilst teaching history i discovered that Akbar, one of the Mughal emperors would pay people to translate books for him. He would pay them with gold, the weight of the book they translated. He would have people reading in his court from various different texts.

Unfortunately today there is no emphasis on knowledge except for the pursuit of wealth. There is no pursuit of knowledge “in the name of your Lord”. There is no pursuit of knowledge to see Allah(SWT)’s great engineering and artistry, no seeking of knowledge for the benefit of society. We study only for an exam that would increase our financial value.

So we who possess the legacy of this powerful night, sadly celebrate it as an isolated annual ritual with great fervor but without paying tribute to its legacy, READING & WRITING, the quest to explore this amazing world that Allah(SWT) created for us.

PS – DEENI & DUNYA knowledge. These two terms have confused our education. Many are those that separate “DEENI & DUNYA” knowledge with some speaking for or against either one. This is truly a critical flaw Muslims need to attend to.

Simple example of our common understanding

DEENI                                                                          DUNYA –

Wudu  From Quraan, Allah taught us                    water cycle – created by ALLAH(SWT)

Halaal From Quraan, Allah taught us                    nutritious food created by ALLAH(SWT)

Who created DUNYA? ALLAH(SWT)

In Islam there is no DEENI / DUNYA knowledge

There is no secular / religious knowledge ALL KNOWLEDGE is from ALLAH(SWT)

Knowledge should be acquired, “in the name of your Lord”, identifying Allah as the Supreme Creator

  • To discover His Greatness
  • To benefit humanity physically and spiritually
  • To establish peace and justice on earth…

Truth is we, the best people evolved for mankind, cannot take our positions as witness’s over humanity. We cannot be the Khalifa’s we are meant to be until we become the pioneers of FAITH & KNOWLEDGE.

If we continue our path of ignorance of the meaning of the Quraan, if we continue on a path of separation of Deeni and Dunya knowledge and if we continue on the path of priesthood and disunity in Islam than we can blame none but ourselves for being oppressed, ridiculed and killed throughout this earth.
